About Us
Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino. Basecamp of the Rockies
Alberta’s Nakoda First Nation is comprised of three bands: Bearspaw, Chiniki and Good Stoney. Nakoda means friend, ally, and the name “Stoney” was given to them by explorers, because of their technique of using fire-heated rocks to boil broth in rawhide bowls.
The Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino is located just 35 minutes west of Calgary, on the Trans Canada Highway at the junction of Highway 40 going to Kananaskis. The resort is also just a short distance to the towns of Canmore and Banff.
On June 10, 2008 the Stoney Nakoda Casino doors officially opened. Less than a year later in February of 2009, the hotel portion of the resort was completed, and began welcoming guests.
